UMBERTO ORSINI COMPANY

NINE

by Edoardo Erba

starring Massimiliano Franciosa e Claudia Crisafio

directed by Mauro Avogradro

The play consists of nine fragments. It's not sketches or drafts - on the opposite it's comedies packed into ten minutes. With just a few lines that serve to outline precisely the characters on stage, the playwright goes for jugular with a plot twist. Themes and subjects vary from fragment to fragment while the style remains the same: the author draws its inspiration from daily situations, and very recognizable ones at that, but by “flexing” the reality he lets the story take flight and projects it into a surreal universe. His craft lies in the velocity of this “building” activity: no brick is wasted, and every detail can be interpreted in a double manner, therefore revealing itself only in the final stages of the play.

Edoardo Erba, born in Pavia, has grown artistically at the Piccolo Teatro in Milano and lives in Roma. “Maratona di New York” it's his most well-known work, along with “Muratori” and “Margherita e il Gallo”. “Maratona” has been translated in seventeen languages, published in eight of those and has been performed all over the world. “Muratori” is a phenomenon now in its thirteenth year of re-runs. “Margherita e il gallo” has been performed in the most prestigious stages of Italy. Erba is a professor of Stage writing at the Università of Pavia and is a patron for Italy at the Theatre Biennial of Staatstheater Wiesbaden. He is considered among the most bright talents of his generation. In his plays he blends drama with comedy.
